Have you ever felt so passionate about something, that nothing that anybody could say to you could convince you otherwise? Whether its a dream, hobby, or even vacation plans, we all get passionate about something. Our desire to pursue a goal comes from our belief in its ability to make our lives, or others, better. But did you know, that 50% of businesses fail with in the first year of operation, and that 95% of businesses fail within the first five years? Why is that? Planning to pursue something, and actually taking steps of faith to follow-through with those plans, are two completely different actions. Luke 9:57-62 teaches us the importance of counting the cost before making the commitment, especially when it comes to following Jesus.
“As they were going down the road someone said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.'”
We can see that the person talking to Jesus seemed very passionate about following Him. He even goes as far as to say “I will follow you wherever you go.” We get passionate too. But what this person failed to realize is the cost of following Jesus. Jesus was going out preaching the good news, performing many miracles in many towns and places but had no where to “lay his head.” He was always on the move, because he understood the importance of His mission. Are you willing to give up your comfort for His will?
“To another he said, ‘Follow me.’ But he said, ‘Lord, let me first go and bury my father.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.'”
At first glance, Jesus’ response to this person might sound harsh, but why does He respond in this way? Jesus wasn’t disregarding the importance of burying close relatives or handling family affairs, but when compared to the Kingdom of God, there’s nothing that comes close. Jesus wants us to put Him first, even when it comes to things that are important to us. Are you willing to put God’s priorities before your own?
“Yet another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.’ Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
The longer you delay the call to follow Jesus, the harder it is to leave your own personal will behind. God wants us to dive deeper into Him, to understand Him and to have a fulfilling life with Him. We limit that fulfillment when we constantly look back and anchor ourselves in our personal desires. The call is simple, follow Jesus, but the cost is both difficult and challenging. It takes a step of faith to trust in God’s call for your life.
Do you know the cost? Are you putting God’s will before your own? Whats holding you back from diving deeper with God? God’s desire is to use you for his great purposes. The cost isn’t always going to be easy, but the importance of following Jesus is second to none.
